Democrat Angela Alsobrooks became Maryland’s first Black U.S Senator after defeating Republican Larry Hogan. Alsobrooks, the Prince George’s County executive, will succeed Democrat Ben Cardin, who will retire from the Senate at the end of his term.

She is the fourth Black woman to be elected in the U.S. Senate, including Carol Moseley Braun in 1992, Kamala Harris in 2016 and Lisa Blunt Rochester, who also won on Tuesday night.

Alsobrooks vowed to support abortion access, promising to co-sponsor the Women’s Health Protection Act. This legislation would act as a step towards codifying federal protection for the right to provide and access abortion care, according to her campaign website.

Maryland has not elected a Republican senator in more than four decades.
