On March 16, 2026, Chelsea F.C. received a €10.75 million fine and a one-year transfer suspension for violating Premier League Financial rules with their old ownership group led by Roman Abramovich, from the 2011-2018 Premier League seasons.

Additionally, the club was hit with a nine-month academy transfer ban.

Current Chelsea owner, Todd Boehly, self-reported the breach sanctions that occurred while the old ownership was in charge at that time, and that self-report lessens the damage that Chelsea could’ve received if they hadn’t.

If Chelsea hadn’t self-reported, the team would’ve faced a point deduction for breaching the Premier League rules of transfers.

Investigators found that Abramovich made €47 million

Those undisclosed payments were handled by a third party that was associated with the club’s players and unregistered agents who handled the contracts of the Chelsea signings.

However, Chelsea could’ve avoided this incident if the payments had been included in the historical financial submissions; it would not have counted as a breach of contract.

Chelsea was separately charged with 74 alleged breaches of the rules set by the football association.

Former Chelsea stars were mentioned throughout their time at Chelsea, such as Eden Hazard, Willian Borges da Silva and Samuel Eto’o Fils, among many players who were linked to the period of the investigation in the 2012-2018 signings run by Abramovich.

However, despite the one-year suspension, Chelsea is still allowed to sign first-team players as normal. The suspension will only be activated if they proceed to break the rules again within the next two years, which can be activated at any time by the Premier League.
