For the eighth time in its history, the Los Angeles Dodgers are World Series champions. The Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in five games and they did so coming down from 5-0 in the fifth inning. A mirage of errors committed by the Yankee defense allowed them to tie the game with two outs in the fifth. They never looked back as they won 7-6, hoisting the Commissioner’s Trophy as a result.
Freddie Freeman won World Series MVP, a much deserved honor, as he hit four home runs in five games, including 12 runs batted in or RBIs. Other players who contributed were Tommy Edman, who scored six runs and had an on-base percentage or OBP at .400. Teoscar Hernández also had an impressive showing. Other players like Gavin Lux and Max Muncy provided depth to an already loaded team.
On the pitching side, Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched an outstanding game in his first-ever World Series start in Game 2. After giving up an early solo home run to Juan Soto, Yamamoto shut everyone down, allowing no hits and no runs after. Walker Buehler also had an impressive outing in Game 3; he pitched five innings of two hit balls and allowed zero runs. Buehler also pitched the ninth inning of Game 5 to secure the final three outs of the World Series.
Despite the success the Dodgers had during the regular season and in the postseason, it wasn’t without adversity. The Dodgers suffered through a barrage of injuries, particularly on the pitching staff. Their Hall of Fame pitcher Clayton Kershaw only took the mound a few times throughout the season, and Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin were out for the entire season.
Muncy played in less than half of the regular season battling injuries and Mookie Betts was out for some time in the second half of the season with a hand fracture. But despite all that, the Dodgers were still able to come through when it mattered most. They didn’t rely on their superstar trio of Shohei Ohtani, Betts and Freeman, they relied on everyone.
Everyone did their part and therefore it led to their triumph.
