Julián Castro is the chief executive officer of the Latino Community Foundation (LCF). The LCF serves as an umbrella foundation that  supports multiple Latino organizations focused on advocacy.  Castro plans to fulfill the mission of the LCF to launch a large funding initiative of $250 million to Latino communities.

Castro plans to distribute the endowment as grants, though the details are still being finalized. Many of these communities are nonprofits and could use the help of these grants.

“The destiny of the United States is intertwined with the destiny of the Latino community like never before,” Castro told The Associated Press. “We’re confident that by helping to ensure that the Latino community does well, we’re helping to ensure that the United States does well in the years to come.”

Hispanics in Philanthropy is another umbrella organization that moves to network Latino nonprofits with investors, leaders, and funders. The organization has supported thousands of Latino-serving organizations through fundraising programs.

According to Hispanics in Philanthropy, less than 2% of foundations give to Latino-focused nonprofits,” states Geofounders. With latino organizations needing funds, Castro moves to relieve the problem.

Some of the main categories of the Latino organizations are: civil rights and advocacy organizations, educational and youth empowerment organizations, professional and business development organizations, and health and social services organizations.

With the help of the funds and the most categorized Latino organizations, things such as STEM training, scholarship offering, career development, immigration reform, and protecting social justice can come to be.

These organizations only receive a small share of philanthropic funding as well as a small amount of government funding to those who are eligible. This endowment aims to create long-term financial stability.

However, while the plan is still in works, questions are raised about equal distribution and whether or not $250 million will be sufficient to meet the needs of Latino communities in need nationwide.
