The NFL season is underway with some teams performing well and some off to a poor start, halfway through the season with exciting highlights and many more but not as exciting as the NFL trade deadline.
What is the NFL trade deadline and why has it always been the most anticipated day for the NFL?
The trade deadline isn’t a rare term used in the sports industry as many other leagues use this term. However, with the NFL season officially hitting their halfway mark of the season.
This is the day that NFL teams, depending on their performances so far in the season. Teams decide if they want to have an aggressive approach and send away their future for current players or a softer approach and give away their current players for the future.
Now, despite having a set deadline day, teams were allowed to start making phone calls to others to talk about the viability of the player for the trade market, as the first trade of the regular season occurred on Oct. 14, 2024.
The New York Jets made a blockbuster trade with the Las Vegas Raiders as the Jets sent their 2025 conditional third-round pick to achieve six-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro wide receiver Devante Adams
Conditional draft picks are based on the amount of starts or performance based stats which can either benefit the team earning the pick. If the player were to achieve any of those goals, it would increase to a one round pick earlier, allowing the team to earn a better chance at a potential top talent.
This trade brought back the duo partnership of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Devante Adams, who both played together from 2014 - 2021 with the Green Bay Packers.
Next, we head over to Buffalo, New York as the Buffalo Bills completed a trade with the Cleveland Browns to acquire four-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro wide receiver Amari Cooper and a 2025 sixth-round pick, sending over a 2025 third-round and 2026 seventh-round pick to give Bills quarterback Josh Allen, more options for the offense.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been dealing with an injury-riddled season despite owning the best record in the NFL. It made a trade on Oct. 24 to acquire five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro wide receiver Deandre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans to send a 2025 conditional fifth-round pick to help Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The Baltimore Ravens have been dealing with question marks at wide receiver but decided to add more depth at that position by acquiring wide receiver Panthers wide receiver Diontae Johnson and adding a 2025 sixth-round pick, giving away a 2025 fifth-round pick on Oct. 29.
After an impressive start to the season for the Washington Commanders, it was poised to make an aggressive approach and the team struck gold, acquiring former All-Pro New Orleans Saints defensive back Marshon Lattimore to bolster their young defensive back core on Nov. 5. Giving away a 2025 third-, fourth- and sixth-round pick to additionally gain a 2025 fifth-round pick from the Saints.
As these teams make these trades to either strengthen their current momentum into the playoff hunt and or building for the future, let’s see how these trades can impact within the teams.
